About the Artist
Edward was born and educated in the North West of England on Merseyside, and emigrated to America in 1978 with his wife and daughter. Once he had completed his education, he served a five year apprenticeship to a large construction company in the trade of carpentry and joinery. He worked with this company for 17 years, before moving to America.
After settling in Kingwood, WV, he opened a small construction and cabinet making business operating in the tri state area of West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Over the years Edward progressed more into custom cabinetry and furniture making and eventually set-up a workshop for this type of work.
One of the tools in his workshop is a wood lathe. Turning objects from wood is one of the oldest forms of art dating back to prehistoric times. In early America, colonial furniture makers used wood turnings to make chairs, beds, tables, and as decorative ornamentation on special pieces to enhance structure and beauty.
The wood lathe has become his tool of choice and he works with it constantly using mainly domestic woods found locally as well as other materials such as Deer Antler which has been shed naturally, and man made materials such as Corian, Wilsonart, and Formica. Edward’s work consists of natural edged bowls made from green wood, segmented bowls, boxes from kiln dried woods, and novelty items. He exhibits his work at Galleries and juried craft shows.
